Speed is a major cause of accidents. The faster you drive, the longer it will take to stop. And the faster you hit something, the greater the effect of the impact.
Ways to avoid speeding
- Drive to the conditions of the road: this doesn’t necessarily mean driving at 30mph in a 30 zone. It means taking time to assess the road, the weather, and any obstacles (e.g. roadworks) and adjusting to a safe speed.
- Leave early so you don’t feel like you’re in a rush to get to your destination.
- Pay close attention to the speedometer and avoid getting distracted by things such as the music playing in the car.
- If you feel the need to speed – try and stay 5mph below the speed limit. It won’t significantly increase your travel time, and it might save you a speeding ticket, or worse!
