Activity idea: Being seen

This activity helps children find out which colours are bright and which are dull.

What you need:

A large box filled with pieces of small games equipment: e.g. balls, rubber rings, beanbags, bats. Some should be in bright yellow or orange colours, some in dull red or blue colours.

Organisation:

Place the box in a corner of the room, clear of the working area

Activity:

  1. Ask the children to pick something brightly coloured from the box.
  2. If they choose a bright colour they find a space and find lots of ways to play with it.
  3. If they choose a dull colour they have to put it back and choose again they can only play if they choose a bright colour.
  4. After 2-3 minutes ask the children to put the equipment back in the box and choose something else.
  5. At the end of the activity discuss why it’s a good idea to dress brightly when they are going out and about. Can the children describe the brightest clothes they have at home?
  6. Draw the children’s attention to the importance of being seen by drivers when walking near roads and traffic.
