Scotland's Road Safety Framework

The Road Safety Framework 2030 sets an ambitious vision for Scotland to have the best road safety performance in the world. Measuring progress towards this requires the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). One of these KPI’s will work towards a change in Attitudes and Behaviour: ‘we will engage in partnership working to enable all road users to understand their road safety responsibilities, allowing them to improve their attitudes and behaviours for the safety of themselves and others.’

Road Safety Scotland support education of in-car child safety; specifically focusing on properly fitted seatbelts and child seats which are key to reducing the severity of injuries, should a collision occur.

Working in partnership with Good Egg Safety, a dedicated team responsible for providing all of the information families require relating to child seat safety, Road Safety Scotland arrange community events offering drivers a child car seat check. The most recent community events, run across Aberdeenshire, Moray and Aberdeen, found that 53% of child car seats checked, were incorrectly fitted with all having major or incompatible errors.

As well as the community events, Good Egg Safety Experts share their knowledge and expertise with drivers, addressing any concerns around selecting and buying the right child car seat, ask the expert services, fitting videos and a blog.

In Scotland, any child under the age of 12 years old or 135cms tall must use a car seat when in a vehicle. Drivers are responsible for ensuring any child under the age of 14 is properly restrained whilst travelling in their vehicle and failure to do so could result in a driver being fined £100 for each child that is not properly strapped in.
