Slower is safer. Driving at 20mph protects everyone.

If you hit someone at 30mph, they’re seven times more likely to die than at 20mph. To keep everyone safe in cities, towns and villages across Scotland, new reduced 20mph speed limits will be put in place on all appropriate roads.

Why is the speed limit now 20mph in built up areas?

By making the speed limit 20mph across our cities, towns and villages, we can help to keep everyone in our communities safe. Lowering the speed limit will mean fewer collisions, as well as reducing the severity of any collisions that do occur.

The facts from 2022

Roads with a speed limit of 30mph saw:

  • 69% of all pedestrian casualties
  • 54% of all pedal cyclist casualties
  • 33% of all motorcyclist casualties
  • 30% of all car casualties

To keep everyone safe in cities, towns and villages across Scotland, 20mph is now the national limit in all built up areas.

Creating a healthier, fairer and greener Scotland

Lowering the speed limit to 20mph will help to improve the places we live, and help Scotland to reach its net zero goal. Slower vehicles mean safer spaces for everyone to enjoy, and encourages people to walk, wheel or cycle instead of jumping in the car. By leaving the car home more often, we can also reduce our carbon footprint and enjoy the benefits of quieter, greener streets and communities.
