Who we are

Road Safety Scotland is part of Transport Scotland, the Scottish Government’s transport agency. This means that Transport Scotland is the Data Controller in respect of personal information that we gather and process in relation to RSS websites. Transport Scotland is committed to complying with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and being open and transparent about how we use personal information.

The information we collect from visitors to this site is their site usage information from session cookies and log files only.

Personal information submitted through online contact forms and member log-in areas includes names, addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses.

Why we need it

We need to know your basic personal data to:

  • Monitor, measure, improve and protect the content of our website and services to provide enhanced and personal user experience.
  • Respond to enquiries and requests for advice and information packs.

Legal basis for processing

In order to process and use your personal information lawfully, we rely on the following legal basis:

  • Consent – this applies when we store analytical cookies on your device to measure your interaction with the site so we can make improvements on your device.
  • Public task – this applies when you contact us or sign up to a members log-in area in order to make an enquiry, seek advice or request guidance materials.

How long we hold your personal information

Transport Scotland participates in the Scottish Government’s records management process which sets out how long we keep information. The current Scottish Government policy and procedures in relation to records management are set out in the Scottish Government’s Record Management Plan.

Sharing your personal information

We will not share your personal information with any other third parties unless required to do so by law or by prior notice and choice.

Cookies and website traffic analysis

When users enter some RSS websites their computers will automatically be issued with ‘cookies’. Cookies are text files which identify users’ computers to RSS’ server. The website then creates ‘session’ cookies to store some of the preferences of users moving around the website, e.g. retaining a text-only preference. Cookies in themselves do not identify individual users but identify only the computer used and they are deleted on departure from the website.

Many websites do this to track traffic flows, whenever users visit those websites.

Some RSS websites use third-party cookies to measure use of the website, including number of visitors, how frequently pages are viewed, and the city and country of origin of users. This helps to determine what is popular and can influence future content and development. For this purpose, RSS uses Google Analytics, to measure and analyse usage of the website. The information collected by RSS will include IP Address, pages visited, browser type and operating system. The data will not be used to identify any user personally.

Users have the opportunity to set their computers to accept all cookies, to notify them when a cookie is issued, or not to receive cookies at any time. The last of these means that certain personalised services cannot then be provided to that user.

Log files

Log files stored on RSS’ web server allow the recording and analysis of users’ use of the website. Log files do not contain any personal information.

Links

RSS websites contain links to other sites. Please be aware that RSS is not responsible for the privacy practices of such other sites. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our sites and to read the privacy statements of each and every website that collects personally identifiable information. This privacy statement applies solely to information collected by RSS websites.

Surveys

From time-to-time our sites request information from users via surveys or contests. Participation in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary and the user therefore has a choice whether or not to disclose this information. The requested information typically includes contact information (such as name and address), and demographic information (such as postal code). Contact information will not be shared with any third parties unless we give prior notice and choice. Though we may use an intermediary to conduct these surveys or contests, they may not use users’ personally identifiable information for any secondary purposes.

This permission does not extend to any material on the RSS websites that is identified as being the copyright of a third party. You must obtain authorisation to reproduce such material from the copyright holders concerned.

Should you wish to re-publish (as opposed to photocopy) any of the RSS copyright material please contact us to obtain permission.
