Notes for Educators

You can make this activity a discussion (teachers, use your smartboard) and ask:

  • Why is it important to wear bright or reflective clothing in the dark? (When light from a car’s headlights hits reflective clothing, it shines back far more light to the driver than normal clothing, making the person easier to see.)
  • Can you see the reflective strips on the red outfit?
  • Why is it better to have bright or reflective colours higher up on your clothing? (It gives the driver more chance of seeing you. Having reflectors on shoes/ankles also helps you to be seen when crossing the road in the dark.)
  • Do you know any reflective pieces of clothing that you could wear (Like armbands, sashes, waistcoats, jackets or footwear)?
  • Why doesn’t wearing bright jumpers under dark coats help drivers to see us? (Children can think that wearing a brightly coloured jumper helps – but often it’s covered by a jacket or school bag.)
  • Look at the children’s own jacket and identify bright colours, reflective sections, etc.
  • Look at examples of reflective materials and demonstrate how they work.
  • Discuss how reflective badges or tags or stickers can be added to school bags or jackets, if they’re not already there.
