Have you clicked? Seatbelt advice.

It doesn’t matter if you’re nipping round the corner or travelling for hundreds of miles – you’re more likely to die or suffer serious injury if you’re not wearing a seatbelt.

Class activity: Use these questions as discussion points or thought starters in pairs or in a group.

  1. Reasons why some people don’t belt up:
    • ‘The car has airbags’
    • ‘Seatbelts are uncomfortable’
    • ‘The car was only going slowly’
  2. What other reasons have you heard for not belting up in the car?
  3. Whose life are you putting in danger when you don’t put your seatbelt on?
  4. Can you think of an occasion when you would either forget or decide not to put on your seatbelt?

Activity: Safety message

  • Working in pairs or threes, invent a short car safety message that encourages people to wear a seatbelt.
  • This message would be transmitted before the ignition is switched on.
  • It could have a serious tone or it could be more informal, e.g. using slang, or rhyming words.
  • When you’re finished, share it with the class.

Discussion points:

  1. Would your message work? Would people put their seatbelt on if they heard this?
  2. If you don’t think it would work, how could you change it to make it better?
  3. With self-driving cars becoming more popular, what do you see as the future of seatbelts?
