Advice for New Drivers

Drugs affect a driver’s co-ordination. If you take drugs and drive, you might think you’re driving safely when you’re not.

Drug driving is not just about illegal drugs such as:

  • Cannabis
  • Marijuana
  • Ecstasy
  • Cocaine
  • Heroin.

…but also about prescription drugs and over the counter drugs which can just as dangerous to driver safety. If you take any medication before driving it is important that you check the instructions on the packet or seek a pharmacist’s advice to ensure it will not impair your driving.

The law on driving while on drugs

The penalties are the same for drivers caught driving under the influence of illegal drugs and drivers caught driving under the influence of prescribed drugs:

  • Disqualification for at least a year.
  • A fine of up to £5,000.
  • Up to six months imprisonment.
  • If you cause a death by careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs you could be imprisoned for up to 14 years.
